RE: Reid (Cal) Adams elected chair of the board of directors of Legal Aid of NC

(Raleigh, NC) – – Reid C. “Cal” Adams, Jr. was elected chair of the board of directors of Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) during the 2005 LANC Annual Meeting in Sunset Beach, N.C.

Adams is an attorney in the law firm of Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, PLLC, in Winston-Salem, and a 1981 cum laude graduate of the Wake Forest University School of Law.

Adams is a founding director of Legal Aid of North Carolina, a three-term president of Legal Aid Society of Northwest North Carolina, and a member of the American Bar Association’s Pro Bono Advisory Committee. He succeeds Leo L. Allison of Mebane, who was the first non-attorney to serve as chair of Legal Aid of NC since its inception following the consolidation of LSC- funded legal services programs in North Carolina in July 2002.

“I am honored to have been selected to Chair this great organization,” said Adams, “and I am proud to be a part of an effort to help poor people in their time of need. Helping poor people with their serious legal problems is what LANC does. LANC attorneys make sure that landlords, car dealers and finance companies treat poor people fairly by making them follow the law.

“During my year as Chairman of the Board of Directors of LANC, I want to educate the legal and non-legal communities about the work which LANC's dedicated attorneys do on behalf of poor people.”

Other officers elected included: Glenn A. Barfield (of Barnes, Braswell & Haithcock, PA, Goldsboro, NC) as Vice Chair; and Leto Copeley (Patterson Harkavy & Lawrence, LLP, Raleigh, NC) as Treasurer; and Mary Flowers (client representative, High Point NC) as Secretary.

Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) is a statewide, nonprofit law firm that provides free legal services in civil matters to eligible, low-income people in all 100 counties in North Carolina through 24, geographically located offices in North Carolina. LANC’s clients typically have an annual income of 125% or less of the federally established poverty levels.
