Gifts of long-term appreciated securities are the most popular type of outright property gift. The securities are often individual stocks, but may include bonds or shares of mutual funds. Outright gifts of securities can be made quickly and easily and enable you to do more with your gift because of the tax benefits.

By transferring appreciated stock or securities to NLADA, you may be eligible for a tax deduction equal to full fair market value of the stock, avoiding the capital gains tax on the stock s increased value. For example, if you give stock that is now worth $5,000, you may be able to deduct this full amount on your income tax return even though you may have bought the stock for substantially less. The result: a charitable deduction is allowed for profits that have never been taxed to you, and NLADA will keep the entire proceeds since we are exempt from the tax.

For instruction on how to make a transfer, please contact the Development Office at Development@nlada.org or 202-452-0620, ext. 217.
