Project Director - Mental Health Project
The Urban Justice Center (UJC) seeks an experienced and dynamic Project Director (PD) to lead our Mental Health Project (MHP).
MHP is one of 8 self-funding projects of the Urban Justice Center. MHP provides legal advocacy to clients on a range of issues, including risk of eviction, family law, denial of a wide-range of government benefits, and discharge planning. Our mission is to help low-income New Yorkers with psychiatric disabilities break the devastating cycle of depravation of benefits, homelessness, hospitalization, and incarceration and regain dignity and hope. To reach the individual clients who are most in need, we go to hospitals, jails, drop-in centers and provide community legal clinics. Our team of lawyers, social workers, and advocates helps hundreds of people each year with a wide spectrum of issues. When we discover gaps in the safety net while serving individual clients, we educate, organize, and litigate to protect the rights of thousands.
MHP has initiated a number of class action lawsuits to require government agencies to provide benefits, discharge planning, and appropriate housing in the community for people with psychiatric disabilities. For more information, see http://www.urbanjustice.org/ujc/projects/mental.html.
The PD's leadership falls into five general areas. First, the PD provides overall leadership and legal direction for MHP. Second, the PD represents MHP within the mental health field. Third, the PD engages in fundraising for MHP and manages MHPs budget. Fourth, the PD manages a staff of 14 and a handful of volunteers. Finally, the PD works with the Urban Justice Center's Executive Director and other Project Directors on management issues concerning the Urban Justice Center.
