DNA Evidence

DNA tests have the potential to produce powerful and convincing results, but that potential is not always realized. Careful evaluation sometimes reveals significant problems that render DNA evidence far less probative than it might initially appear.

If you are new to DNA evidence, click "Where do I start" for a tutorial.

Document *DNA Transfer Studies--Summary Summary of findings of nine studies on the potential for DNA to be transfered from one item to another. Excellent place to start when considering the possibility of inadvertent DNA transfer. Prepared by lawyer Martin Murphy.

Document *NIST Mixture Study #2 NIST sent mixed DNA samples to forensic labs to see whether they could decompose the mixtures properly using STR tests. Answer: Not always. Infering major and minor contributor from peak heights can be problematic.
