Peer Review Report--State v. Bromgard
Five prominent hair experts reviewed the testimony of Arnold Melnikoff, former chief of Montana State crime laboratory in case of State v. Jimmy Bromgard. They find that Melnikoff made "egregious misstatements not only of the science of forensic hair examinations but also of genetics and statistics" and call on Montana Attorney General to create a review committee to reevaluate all of Malnikoff's work. Malnikoff's chicanery came to light when Jimmy Bromgard was exonerated by DNA evidence after serving 14 years in prison for a rape he did not commit. This appears to be yet another instance in which forensic fraud contributed to a false conviction. See also Peter Neufeld's letter to the Montana AG, urging review of Malnikoff's work in other cases.
