Byrne Formula Grants"Edward Byrne Memorial State and Local Law Enforcement Assistance"Approximately $500 million per year, distributed to the states on a formula basis (depending on population and crime rates) by the Bureau of Justice Assistance in the U.S. Department of Justice. Each governor designates a state agency to decide how to spread the money among the congressionally authorized 26 purpose areas relating to criminal justice (including indigent defense, technology, and alternative sentencing programs).
Local Law Enforcement Block GrantsDistributed to local jurisdictions on a formula basis by the Bureau of Justice Assistance. FY 2001 appropriation: $530 million. See purpose areas, procedures and NLADA tips.
Juvenile Accountability Incentive Block GrantsBlock grants to states, with an emphasis on establishing systems of "graduated sanctions" for juveniles. Administered by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention in the U.S. Department of Justice. Purpose areas include indigent defense. Crime Identification Technology Act$130 million grant program to states, can assist defenders in integrating their technology systems with other criminal justice agencies. Click here for more information.
