John G. Brooks Consumer Law Fellowships
NLADA/NCLC Consumer Law Fellowship Program
NLADA and the National Consumer Law Center have decided to name the Fellowships awarded as part of
their joint Consumer Law Fellowship Program in honor of John G. Brooks.
John Brooks has been one of the most noteworthy advocates for legal services for more than sixty
years. He is a life member of NLADA, and as a member of its Executive Board and its President in
the 1970s appeared before Congress on our behalf many times. He is a long time member of the Board
of Directors of the National Consumer Law Center. President Clinton appointed him to the Board of
the Legal Services Corporation where he served nobly during some frightening fights for LSC’s
survival. He first joined the Board of Greater Boston Legal Services in 1955, when it was called
the Boston Legal Aid Society, and oversaw its profound reshaping in the late 1960s. He has been
President of the Boston Bar Association and the Boston Bar Foundation; a member of the
Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers; recipient of the ABA Pro Bono Publico Award; a Life Fellow of
the American Bar Foundation; and a Life Member of the American Law Institute; and much more.
Well into his 90s, he is still going strong.
