State funding has become a large funding source for civil legal aid. In 2006, state funding totaled approximately $180,000,000. This included approximately $88,000,000 from court fees and fines in 30 states, and $92,000,000 from direct state appropriations in 30 states. To date, legal aid programs in 44 states receive at least one form of state funding.

The ABA Resource Center for Access to Justice Initiatives tracks and provides technical assistance on state funding issues. Contact Meredith McBurney for more information.
