Position Description:

Position: Legal Aid Services of Oregon (LASO) seeks a Part-time (0.6 FTE) Supervising Attorney for its Hillsboro office. The Hillsboro office represents migrant and seasonal farm, nursery and forestry workers.

LASO is a non-profit organization that represents low-income clients in civil cases. LASO has eight regional offices that serve the general low-income population and two specialized statewide programs that provide services to farmworkers and representation on Native American issues. The Farmworker Program includes five attorneys and two paralegals who specialize in representing farmworkers in employment, civil rights, housing, health and tax issues. LASO is an effective, high-quality legal services program that is committed to advocacy strategies to achieve justice for low-income Oregonians.

The majority of our farmworker clients are Spanish-speaking immigrants. They experience a wide variety of legal problems, including unpaid wages, poor working conditions, unsafe housing, illegal evictions, discrimination and retaliation for the exercise of their legal rights.

Geographic Location: Hillsboro is located in Washington County, one of Oregon’s leading agricultural producers. An ethnically diverse community 20 miles west of Portland, accessible by public transportation.

Requirements:

The Supervising Attorney will assist in supervising one staff attorney and a paralegal and will also represent farmworkers in federal and state courts and before administrative agencies. The case load consists primarily of employment, housing, civil rights and tax cases. The Supervising Attorney will also be involved in community education and outreach to migrant labor camps, which may include occasional overnight travel.

Qualifications: We seek applicants who have a commitment to justice for farmworkers; at least five years' legal experience; excellent legal skills including litigation experience; ability to speak and read Spanish; and membership in the Oregon bar or eligibility to obtain membership through reciprocity.
